| Many
of our companies are hiring workers from outside Canada. Under existing
safety legislation the employer has a responsibility to provide
safety training to these new employees.
Many
of these employees have a limited knowledge of English and come
from a culture where safety is not important.
To
assist employers with this safety training we have developed a two
day course called English Second Language Safety Awareness. We have
removed all the program building from the existing Safety Basics
training course and with the assistance of NorQuest College have
put this into plain simple English. There will be an examination,
in the language of the attendees, at the end of the two days.
Two
of our instructors have attended two days of training at NorQuest
College. This training was specific to the delivery of training
to ESL students.
This
two day course meets the basic safety requirements that all employees
need to start work at your worksite. It does not relieve you of
your responsibility as an employer for training under Section 15
of the OHS Regulation or other legislated training that is specific
to your worksite.
This
course will be customized to meet some of your specific site requirements:
- Hazard
Assessment
-
Fall Protection
-
Safety Rules
-
PPE
-
WHMIS – instructor will do a generic WHMIS presentation.
The site safety person will follow this with a site specific presentation
- Emergency
Response
The
instructor will visit the worksite 1-2 weeks before the course is
presented and meet with the company safety coordinator. They will
discuss the above points and agree on the areas that will be covered
in more detail at the training session. The instructors will then
use specific company information when delivering these sections
of the training.
The
instructor will also discuss the English language fluency with the
safety coordinator to see if a translator may be required.
