"Employers
have an obligation to properly train supervisors in matters relating
to health and safety to ensure they are competent persons."
Being
a professional supervisor requires much more than learning information.
It requires a continual process of thinking about your responsibilities
and exercising your judgment in all kinds of ways. The same thinking
process that applies to the traditional parts of a supervisor's
responsibilities also applies to a supervisor's responsibilities
in the area of health and safety. The Leadership for Safety Excellence
course is designed to get the supervisor started in applying that
same process to safety-related issues. This course is presented
in four modules designed to collectively convey the overall knowledge
of what makes up an effective safety program.
The
four modules covered in the program are THE SUPERVISOR'S ROLE, TRAINING,
INSPECTIONS, AND INCIDENTS/ACCIDENTS INVESTIGATIONS.
The
first module, The Supervisor's Role, is designed to
help the participant understand the role they play as a supervisor
in regards to safety and to feel more confident in that role. This
module will help the supervisor understand the major features of
a good safety program, some of the underlying factors that affect
the program's quality, and some of the safety issues they will face
as a supervisor.
Training
is focused on the supervisor's responsibility to properly train
the workers they supervise. The material provided is designed to
help the supervisor understand what a good training program should
accomplish, what a training program involves and how to design and
present effective training sessions.
Inspections
and Incident/Accident Investigations are covered to assist
the supervisor in implementing these critical aspects of the safety
program. The participants will learn what to look for, how to interpret
findings and how to develop appropriate recommendations for correcting
hazardous conditions found during these procedures.
The
Leadership for Safety Excellence program will enable the
supervisor to incorporate safety into their everyday planning, thus
creating an environment where people can work safely and efficiently,
and where the company can continue to make a lasting contribution
towards the safety of their employees.
This
is a two-day course presented in cooperation with the Alberta Construction
Safety Association. As a third year program member this
course is a mandatory requirement for both Partnership
and PIR participation, for your Safety Coordinators and Supervisors.
