Course Description

In the event of a serious injury or fatality at your worksite you may be subject to a formal investigation by Occupational Health and Safety Officers. If this occurs, most businesses are at a complete loss of how to properly respond.

This two-day course is intended for owners, employers, managers, and supervisors who may have to respond to a formal investigation by OHS Officers or Lead Investigators. You will learn about the government’s investigative practices for serious incidents, the business risks associated with their investigation and how to minimize the potential negative impact on your workplace.

  • OH&S Regulator’s Intervention Model
  • Alberta OH&S Act and Criminal Code of Canada Section 217.1 (Bill C-45)
  • OH&S Incident Investigation and Prosecution Process
  • Employer/Prime Contractor Investigation Procedure
  • Standard OH&S Defences
  • Communication and Scene Management
  • Witness Statements, Warned Statements
  • Gathering and Handling of Exhibits
  • Managing Business Risks and Costs (Administrative Fees and Fines)
  • Employer Review Process

Upon completion of this course you will:

  • Understand the OH&S incident investigation process
  • Understand the rationale Prosecutors use to select cases for prosecution
  • Understand the employer’s rights and responsibilities under the law in the case of serious incident occurring at your worksite
  • Be able to formulate a plan to mitigate business risks associated with an OH&S investigation
