SUBSTANCE ABUSE
IN THE WORKPLACE


 
     

The use of alcohol and drugs in the workplace continues to be a major concern for both employers and employees. What to do about the problem is even a bigger concern.

The purpose of this course is to provide managers, supervisors, lead hands and employees with an understanding of substance abuse as it affects the workplace, the importance of dealing with these issues as they arise and how to deal with them once they do arise.

The course will cover the following:

What’s happening across the country - What’s happening in Alberta

Relationship to:

Accidents
Absenteeism
Performance/productivity

Legislation:
Federal - Alberta

How to identify a problem:
Signs a problem exists
How it affects employees
How employees feel about it – why nothing has been done

What you do after you identify a problem:
Casual use vs. dependency
Treatment
Discipline

Testing:
What is allowed
Who does testing
Site requirements
Safety sensitive

Developing a program:
Effective program that has no legal or union problems
Who should run program
Treatment requirements
Program communication
Training required for managers, supervisors and lead hands
Program monitoring and upkeep

This is a one day course and should be attended by managers, supervisors, lead hands, safety personnel and other company personnel who would deal with this issue in the workplace.
