Primary
objective of the MSO Program is to combine formal training with
the individual's personal work experience. A MSO provides a valuable
resource to management in the administration and implementation
of the company's health & safety program. Entry level certification
indicates that the participant has practical knowledge in various
manufacturing related health & safety management skills and
principles. This program is recommended for safety practitioners
who wish to receive training focused on the manufacturing sector.
This
program will enable participants to:
- "assist"
management in the administration, implementation and maintenance
of a health and safety management system
- identify
and review various health and safety concerns specific to the
work site
- communicate
effectively with government, management and workers regarding
health and safety, on and off the job
Compulsory Courses
*
Applicant must submit the following:
- copy
of Toolbox Meeting prepared and run by applicant
- copy
of an accident investigation completed by applicant
- copy
of a company Hazard Assessment completed by applicant
- copy
of a Company Worksite Safety Inspection completed by applicant

Applicant must complete a competency test on the Occupational
Health & Safety Act, Regulation and Code prepared by the MHSA
Electives (any four of the following)
*
Equivalencies will be considered. This consideration will be at
the discretion of the MHSA Board of Directors.
*Other
courses will be added to the "elective " listing as they become
available.
*Other
courses may be accepted as credits if the MHSA agrees they are
health or safety related.
The participant must submit a recommendation letter from their employer(s)
verifying a minimum of three (3) years health & safety experience
in the manufacturing industry.
Certification
in all required courses must be in place before applying to become
a Manufacturing Safety Officer.
The
University of Alberta's Occupational Health & Safety (OH &
S) Certificate Program is pleased to honour student who possess
the Manufacturing Safety Officer (MSO) professional designation.
Candidates who receive their MSO Certification will receive a maximum
exemption of 21 hours towards the "Enrichment Seminar"
requirement of the OH & S Certificate Program.
Students meeting the admission requirements into the OH & S
Certificate program can apply for exemption credit by completing
the Application for Exemption form

Maintaining Certification
The
Manufacturing Safety Officer must keep current with changes within
the industry.
To
maintain certification the following is required:
Every
two (2) years the Manufacturing Safety Officer must obtain a total
of 8 credits. Credits are established as follows:
- 2
day course 4 credit
- 1
day course 2 credit
- 1/2
day course 1 credit
It
is the responsibility of the MSO to maintain their certification.
MSO must send the required certificates to the MHSA requesting their
certification be current for a further two(2) year period.
