PARTNERS IN INJURY REDUCTION

The Partners in Injury Reduction Program (PIR) is a program between the Workers' Compensation Board of Alberta and employers. This program operates only within Alberta.

PIR is designed to encourage injury prevention and the development of effective workplace health, safety and disability management systems.

PIR is a voluntary program that operates through the combined efforts of the Workers Compensation Board - Alberta, Alberta Employment, Immigration and Industry, industry partners, safety associations, employers and labour groups.

This initiative is based on the concept that when employers and workers build effective health and safety systems, the human and financial costs of workplace injuries can be reduced.

PIR offers employers and industry rate discount and encourages employers to develop health, safety and disability management systems.

The employer can receive up to a 20% discount on their industry rate. This discount offsets to some degree the amount of money spent by the employer implementing their safety program. The employer must have a valid COR to be eligible for the PIR rebate.

In 2002 the PIR Program returned $37,000,000 to 3,700 employers within the province who had successfully completed or maintained their Certificate of Recognition.

In 2002, PIR participants had 13% fewer lost-time claims and 22% lower claims costs than non-PIR participants.

In 2003 there are +7000 employers registered with the PIR Program. This represents 49% of the Alberta workforce covered by the WCB.

See the mandatory courses for the PIR program.
