Is COR associated with lower firm-level injury rates?

Mon, 2018-06-18 13:45

“The effectiveness of COR certification was largest in the Manufacturing sector and for the MHSA audit.”

Why is this?

It was determined that one explanation for this may be that the working environment is static and it is easier to implement and improve OSHMS compared to more dynamic changing working environments associated with other industry sectors (Construction, Forestry/Agriculture, or Oil and Gas).

The above information was established due to a research study conducted by Dr. Christopher McLeod. In 2016, the Alberta Ministry of Labour, with the Occupational Health and Safety Futures Program funded the examination of Alberta’s Certificate of Recognition (COR) program. The study’s hypothesis, was to evaluate if “the COR audit process is effective at identifying “good” OHS practices, then COR-certified firms will be associated with lower injury rates compared to similar non-certified firms.”

For more information please review the Research Brief.

Do you want to impact new OHS regulations? Albertans have a say!

Mon, 2018-03-26 12:53

Did you know Albertans can participate in the development of the new rules for workplace harassment and violence and joint work site health and safety committees? Written submissions are being accepted until April 9th.

Give your feedback to ensure Alberta workers have safe and healthy workplaces; and that the legislation is fair and balanced. Share your ideas by clicking here.

The new Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act takes steps to protect workers from harassment and violence in all forms; requiring joint work site health and safety committees or a worker health and safety representative.

As of June 1, the new OHS Act will:

  • Define harassment and violence in all its forms, including sexual and domestic violence.
  • Require employers and supervisors to take reasonable steps to protect workers from harassment and violence and to investigate incidents.
  • Require workers to refrain from causing or participating in harassment and violence.
  • Have an appeal process for workers disciplined for bringing harassment and violence issues forward.
  • Require joint work site health and safety committees for work sites with 20 or more workers.
  • Require a worker health and safety representative for work sites with five to 19 workers.
  • Require employers and prime contractors to work with joint work site health and safety committees or representatives.

New Crane & Rigging Program Course Structure for 2018!

Tue, 2018-02-13 11:29

The  MHSA Overhead Crane Operator program has a NEW look for 2018!. It consists of  three 1-Day courses that run on consecutive days. Workers can take the number of courses they require for the type of rigging and lifting they do. There is a single Overhead Crane Operator binder that is brought to each course, where content materials are added, and where the worker can add site-specific material to build their own personalized reference book.

  1. The Basic Rigging course is for workers that will be rigging symmetrical loads.
  2. The Overhead Crane Operator – Standard course is for workers that have completed the Basic rigging course and will be lifting symmetrical loads.
  3. The Overhead Crane Operator-Advanced course is for workers that have completed the Standard course and will be rigging and lifting non-symmetrical loads, turning a load over, or making dual crane lifts

Bill 30 takes effect June 1, 2018

Mon, 2018-01-29 13:14

The Government of Alberta’s Bill 30 is an Act to Protect the Health & Well-being of Working Albertans. MHSA is presently reviewing such legislative changes, in an effort to identify what such changes will mean for us, as a Certifying Partner and you, our employer.

Leading up to Bill 30 much discussion and consultation occurred in 2017. The Government of Alberta received input from the public in relation to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) systems and the Workers Compensation Board (WCB). Information on proposed changes may be found by visiting the following:

Anyone who holds a safety related position should review this information.

MHSA will support our membership to better understand Bill 30.

Please stay tuned for more information.
