Ted Lane was born on a farm near Lloydminster, but the family moved to Portsmouth, England. Ted left school at 15 and commenced an apprenticeship with a large company that manufactured ships and aircraft, mainly for the military, and carried out military and civil research projects for ship, aircraft and rocket designs. At 21 he completed his apprenticeship, qualifying as a draftsman and heavy-duty mechanic.
