Job Summary

Tornado Infrastructure Equipment is committed to the highest standards of occupational health and safety. Based in our Custom Vac Services location in Nisku, this Safety Advisor role combines field-level compliance execution with programmatic leadership. The role supports implementation and enforcement of safety initiatives, focusing on confined space entry, welding operations (including welding in confined spaces), fall protection, supplied air systems, safety training, WCB claims, and legislative compliance under Alberta OHS and CSA standards.

The ideal candidate thrives in a boots-on-the-ground safety culture, working closely with shop staff and field crews to lead inspections, drive improvements, and support safe daily operations while coordinating broader safety programs and risk management activities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Field Safety Support (Confined Space, Welding, Fall Protection & Respiratory Safety)

  • Conduct hazard assessments and validate confined space entry protocols, including atmospheric testing, fall protection strategies, and confined space welding controls

  • Ensure compliance with CSA, Alberta OHS, and Fire Code standards related to welding, cutting, and hot work—including tasks performed in confined spaces.

  • Oversee correct use and maintenance of supplied air respiratory systems per CSA Z180.1 and manufacturer guidelines

  • Ensure proper planning and execution of fall protection systems and training in elevated or restricted work areas

  • Monitor fabrication shop and field work to confirm safety measures and PPE are correctly applied

  • Support new installations and custom builds involving hazardous operations

    2. WCB Claims Management & Return-to-Work

  • Collect incident and injury data for WCB Employer Report submission

  • Support development of modified work plans and liaise with Safety Manager on complex cases

  • Track incident trends and maintain complete WCB documentation

  • Conduct WCB clearance checks for subcontractors and vendors as needed

3. Program Implementation & Legislative Compliance

  • Assist in designing and maintaining safety programs and manuals aligned with Alberta OHS and CSA standards

  • Deliver toolbox talks and facilitate field orientations

  • Lead or support job safety analyses, field-level hazard assessments, and safe work procedures

  • Serve as a frontline contact for psychosocial safety risks, including bullying and harassment

4. Inspections, Audits & Incident Investigations

  • Conduct scheduled and ad hoc inspections of equipment, shops, and worksites

  • Work with supervisors and JHSC to assess hazards and verify mitigation

  • Investigate near-misses and incidents using root cause analysis and corrective action planning

  • Lead follow-up documentation and communication of safety incident findings

5. Training, Education & Awareness

  • Coordinate safety-sensitive training certifications and monitor re-certification timelines

  • Facilitate new worker onboarding, safety orientations, and targeted awareness sessions

  • Develop and implement safety campaign materials (e.g., posters, infographics, videos)

  • Actively promote safety engagement and ownership across teams

6. Administrative & Reporting Duties

  • Maintain accurate documentation including inspection records, WCB logs, training matrices, and hazard reports

  • Support preparation of internal safety reports and contribute to monthly/quarterly safety KPIs

  • Update digital and physical safety materials to reflect policy changes and legislative updates

  • Support software-based safety systems and data entry

    Qualifications

    Education & Designations

    • Minimum High School diploma is required

    • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation is preferred

    • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate or Diploma is an asset

    Experience

    • 3–5 years of experience in a dedicated safety position within fabrication, industrial, or construction environments

    • Required demonstrated experience in:

      • Confined space entry, including welding in confined spaces

      • Fall protection systems and planning

      • Welding safety and hot work oversight

      • Supplied air and respiratory protection programs

      • WCB claims and modified duty return-to-work

      • Field-based safety training and orientations

    Certifications & Skills

    • Knowledge of Alberta OHS legislation, CSA standards, and regulatory requirements for Alberta, CCOS, and CLC2

    • Experience with safety management software and digital documentation.

    • Excellent communication and mentoring skills across field and management levels

    • Training in disability or injury management is a strong asset

    • Capable of independent field work, problem-solving, and cross-functional coordination

    Additional Requirements

    • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract

    • Legally eligible to work in Canada

    • Willingness to travel between fabrication facilities and worksites across Alberta as needed

      Working Conditions

      Primary Location: Fabrication shop with regular field inspections.

      • Physical Requirements:

        • Standing, walking, and inspecting for long periods

        • Lifting up to 30 lbs

        • Exposure to high noise, variable temperature, and physical hazards

      • PPE: Must supply CSA-approved steel-toed boots; all other PPE provided by company

      • Safety First: All work must be conducted in accordance with Tornado Infrastructure’s PPE and hazard control policies
