Are you looking for an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to Health and Safety in Alberta? We are looking to add a Safety Advisor with Overhead Crane and Rigging experience to our Northern Alberta team!
What you will do:
Reporting to the Regional Manager, you will assist in providing key services to Manufacturers’ Health & Safety Association (MHSA) members. These key services include delivery of educational and training programs, providing member companies with Health and Safety System advice and assistance, administration of the Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR) programs for MHSA companies and promotion of Association services.
Responsibilities
Course Facilitation of MHSA materials in-person, virtually or on member sites, including Overhead Crane, Rigging, and Forklift.
Participate in the planning and coordination of course offering schedules.
Creation, preparation, and delivery of MHSA services such as on-site safety consultations, inspections, hazard assessments, safety meeting presentations, etc.
Visiting employer and member sites to promote association services.
Responding to member inquiries and providing accurate information.
Travel within the Alberta region; with occasional travel (particularly during the probationary period) between the Rocky View (south) and Red Deer (central) offices (use of company truck if available or expenses and mileage paid).
Projects, duties, and responsibilities as assigned by the Regional Manager.
Requirements
Overhead Crane, Rigging and Forklift experience required.
Minimum 2 years occupational health and safety experience in manufacturing or a related field. (MSO/MSA designation and MHSA Auditor certification would be considered strong assets.)
Enrollment in, or completion of, a post-secondary Occupational Health and Safety certificate program, or equivalent combined education/experience.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with both instructional abilities and customer service skills.
Ability to work independently and within a team.
Ability to present material and regularly speak in front of others (public speaking).
Ability to instruct using a virtual platform (Microsoft Teams).
Strong computer skills, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint and ability to navigate the Internet.
Valid Class 5 Alberta Operators License and a reliable vehicle are required for business travel. A current Alberta Standard Driver’s Abstract is required.
Working knowledge of the Alberta OH&S Act, Regulations, and Code.
Working knowledge of the Alberta WCB Act, policies, and programs.
Experience with environmental safety is considered an asset.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinate health and safety training, including certifications and new hire orientations.
Development and updating of toolbox meetings, MEMO’s, PowerPoint Training Courses, Bulletins, SWP’s, HAA’s & Policies.
Support JHSC with education and resources.
Timely and accurate updating of all required safety matrixes and statistical information.
Ensure incidents are reported and offer administrative support for WCB claims.
Address non-compliance and hazards with corrective actions.
Follow up on incidents and non-compliance and recommend corrective actions.
Conduct facility inspections, complete safety inspection reports, and follow up on corrective action items.
Maintain Safety Boards and weekly update “Days without Lost Time Injuries’ statistics.
Ensure plant safety binders are current, including SDS, SWP, HAA, Training, and Safety Manual binders.
QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent industry experience.
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) designation preferred.
Safety Officer designation. Manufacturing Safety Officer (MSO) is preferred.
Train-the-Trainer Certification (Forklift, Scissor Lift, Overhead Crane, Rigging and Fall Protection) preferred
5+ years prior experience working within the Occupational Health & Safety discipline.
SKILLS REQUIRED
Ability to make critical decisions in complex and high-risk situations.
Strong organizational and attention to detail.
Ability to work effectively and prioritize tasks often with competing deadlines.
Able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Strong communication skills including the ability to deal with others tactfully and professionally.
Strong leadership skills to support the growth of an effective and efficient safety team.
Able to effectively liaise and collaborate with others.
Open to and offer suggestions with a focus on continual improvement; individually, safety team, and organization.
Valid Alberta Driver’s license.
